Japan Tour: Preparation for the CBD and Cartagena Protocol meetings in Nagoya

Japan Tour in preparation of the Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity in October 2010 in Nagoya (COP-MOP 5 und COP10). At the invitation of Japanese civil society, Christine von Weizsäcker met with parliamentarians of GLOBE, academics, civil society organizations and representatives of industry. She participated in the GLOBE Symposium on Biodiversity, Crop Diversity and COP10, gave the keynote speech at a public event by the Nagoya Univ/Asahi Forum at Asahi Hall, and held a seminar for graduate Students at Depanrtment for Environmental Studies.

This document focuses on particular types of ‘biofuel’ which we prefer to call agrofuel because of the intensive, industrial way it is produced, generally as monocultures, often covering thousands of hectares, most often in the global South.

Ecoropa at the CBD negotiations

In the months leading up to the Eleventh Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP11) and the Sixth Meeting of the Carthagena Protocol on Biosafety (MOP6) in India in October 2012, Ecoropa members participated in a number of preparatory meetings including those of the Scientific Body (SBSTTA 15 and 16), the Working Group on the Implementation of the Convention (WGRI 4) as well as in the Second Meeting of the Open-ended Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing (ICNP-2).

Ecoropa supports the Request to the International Court of Environmental Arbitration and Conciliation for a Dictamen on the Possible Contradictions between TRIPS and the Convention on Biological Diversity by the Spanish environmental NGO Ecologistas en Acción in cooperation between Isabel Bermejo and Christine von Weizsäcker.
